There were fears earlier in the year that some of the more tender plants would be lost to the very cold winter and then the spring drought. The Holkham gardening team lavished enormous care on the two plants pictured below; one was cocooned in a custom built straw stack, the other had a hand-stitched straw-lined 'tent' surrounding it, worthy of a Glastonbury camp.
Now we are into July and you can see the new growing tip at the top of the Washingtonia filifera and the new growth of two leaves at the base of the Schefflera macrophylla.
