The exotic looking fruit of the Callicarpa (verbenaceae) is brightening up the snow clad vinery in the Holkham Walled Garden, where yesterday the temperature went down to Minus 2. Bitterly cold for the gardeners out of the sun, but home from home for the Callicarpa. The particular specimen shown here, Callicarpa japonica v. luxurians BSW J8521, is grown from seed collected by the owners of the Crug Farm Nursery in North Wales from their plant expedition in the remote island of Ullungdo, (various spellings) an island off South Korea currently shivering today like us at Minus 2 degrees.
Incidentally, for those local readers with access to Norwich, there is a marvellous display of Callicarpa fruits in the car park of Nottcutts Garden Centre near the farm shop. Do drop us a line in the comments box if you visit it or if you know of another good display in your area.
